An interesting email appeared in my inbox this morning from Twitter regarding one of our clients, Green Car Guide.
It seems the articles they have written and we have posted on Twitter have caught the attention of a rather big name in American Politics. The man I am referring to is none other than the Terminator himself Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Microsoft has recently announced BING, (Stands for But It’s Not Google) a new search engine that will apparently knock Google off it’s already well monopolized perch. The features look good and the visuals look good also but can it really beat Google? Take a peak here and read on below:
Okay, so what do Microsoft do next? It’s rumored that they have $100 million lined up to market this “new” offering. Why would any company try to invest $100 million trying to copy what is already successful?
Do Microsoft really think that Google will see this new offering and cower in the corner? No chance. Google will see what features they use and better them.
2 months of increased market share for $100 million. I wonder what better things could be done with that cash? As Seth Godin gracefully puts
“Google is not seen as broken by many people, and a hundred million dollars trying to persuade us that it is, is money poorly spent. In times of change, the rule is this: Don’t try to be the ‘next’. Instead, try to be the other, the changer, the new.”
Brands aren’t built by money, they are built by reputation and innovation. Networks and “idea viruses” grow brands on the internet, not money. Microsoft’s efforts should be focused on growing word of mouth and increasing social media buzz. Google have a new product that will be open source and asks developers to help better it. Guess who uses the internet Microsoft? Developers! This search engine battle will unfold two lessons:
1. Google are untouchable why people try to recreate what already works
2. Marketing has changed. Focus on an audience that will adopt your ideas and make your product so remarkable that your customers have no other option but to talk about it.

In our industry, the Web Design and Internet Marketing Industry, there are too many “guy’s in the pub” who can do you a website. They sell the solution, design it, develop it and then claim to spend time on it on a monthly basis to justify a fee. It annoys me to the brink when I lose a prospect to a guy in the pub and then that same client approaches us again three months down the line with less budget and less confidence. One guy in the pub even made a client sign off shares in his business – what a joke.
My goal for our business, Webtise is simple: I want to develop websites that are successful, if I don’t think your business idea will work online, I will tell you and offer a different method (where viable) to make a success of your venture. What happens with “Guy’s in the pub” is that most are usually a friend or are individuals that have other jobs. You wouldn’t entrust a guy in the pub to try and do your accounts because it was the cheap option, would you?
A website done correctly will generate you business. Just as you pay an accountant (our’s are fantastic – ERC Online) a monthly revenue to save you money, your Internet window to your customers should MAKE you money. Do not try the guy in the pub, it will only diminish your confidence and waste precious start up budget, I would much rather reduce our margins and see it done correctly!
